Famed British-Australian rule breaker and composer/pianist Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) was a force to reckoned with, both in sheet music and bedsheets. Grainger's mold breaking approach to music making and performing allowed many other composers and musicians to feel a sense of freedom in their creative process. Grainger promulgated (the now very problematic) "Blue-Eyed English" in lieu of traditional Italian/French/German musical direction and phrases. He had a very close relationship with his mother which, speculation has it, rivals that of Norman/Norma Bates.
What interests me about Grainger specifically is how his autoflagellation tendencies shaped his compositional style. Grainger was a self-documented sexual masochist. The photos of his autoflagellation sessions (among other sexual acts) and his very descriptive accounts of both his own sexual awakening during childhood and his sexual maturation during adulthood provide keen insight in to how his musical process may have been shaped.
